March,

9th International Speyer-Forum
"World Trade and Development"
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) is a still young international
organisation, which is increasingly important for developing countries.
Hardly any other international institution is confronted with such
comparably high expectations. Yet no other international institutions is
as fiercely criticised as the WTO. This ambivalent position reflects,
inter alia, the circumstance that the WTO is blamed for being partly
responsible for the deficits of "globalisation". That makes the
WTO the antagonist of the adversaries of this worldwide economic process.
As
a consequence, the WTO is facing a considerable pressure of success. This
pressure is partly to be diminished in the current negotiating round of
the WTO members. Moreover, this round has been explicitly entrusted with
the task of improving the developing countries' situation. Therefore,
experts speak of a special "Doha Development Agenda". The
failure of the 5th WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun, Mexico, has shown,
however, that it is very difficult to strike a balance among all actors'
interests. Against
this backdrop, the WTO Conference to be held from March, 01 until 03,
2004, at the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer will
single out and examine more closely several basic aspects of the world
trading system, which have an impact on developing countries. This
conference is addressed to scientists as well as practitioners from
administrations, associations and non-governmental organisations. The
speakers also scientists and practitioners, too.
